Hydra is accessible only by water. We traveled by ferry to this beautiful island. There are no motorized vehicles, except for those needed for city maintenance. Luggage is moved on motorized pallet movers or by donkey.
Late yesterday afternoon Lyle and I walked up to the point on the right side of the harbor. The huge Apollo Sun wind spinner sculpture by Jeff Koons was erected in 2022 as part of a larger art installation project. The front set of solar rays is stationary while the back rays spin in the wind.
Greco Hotel is absolutely lovely, with a stone courtyard embraced by flowering trees.
We were given two keys when we checked in. One opened our room, the other opened the main door to the hotel. (we are staying at Hotel Greco). The hotel doors are locked at night to keep the hedgehogs out.
Hedgehogs??! I was all in!! Got up super early hoping to get a photo of one.
Alas, no hedgehogs. ☹ But getting up early did have some advantages. I walked out to the point and took a sunrise picture with the sun sculpture in the foreground.
After breakfast Lyle and I walked around
to the left of town, meeting up with some of our crew who were headed off to
the beach. We didn’t go very far since
we didn’t plan to swim anyway.
There were a couple of old windmills on the hilltops. They are different from those in the Netherlands. These are built of stone with more sails.
At the fishing harbor, an old boat sat
up against the cliff, with dried coral in its damaged hull.
And sleepy kitties were ever present: on doorsteps, on stone walls, atop empty tables, and in every nook and corner.
And just a couple more pictures because I’m a
sucker for flowers against the seaside.
Back in town we walked along the maze of alleys and backstreets where we came across the street of blue pots. They were interesting on their own, but from the perspective of the roadway, they came alive.
We enjoyed a wonderful happy hour and then took a last walk around town before stopping for Lyle to get souvlaki and me to get more cookies from the exquisite EU bakery.
Back to the National Museum in Athens for our last
day together
